about

VASSVIK SOLO - A Place Behind The Gardens Of The Houses. BÁIKI is Sámi musician Torgeir Vassvik's third solo album, but the first that he recorded, mixed and produced largely himself. In addition to Vassvik's progressive joiks, the multi-instrumentalist plays more than fifteen instruments on it, from igil and birbyné to mandolin, guitar and gong, frame drum and electronics.

When the pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and label boss heard the first tracks from the album, he was so enthusiastic that he absolutely wanted to release it.

Torgeir Vassvik came up with ideas for the songs in many places, including his homeland at the northernmost point of continental Europe, where the album cover photo was also taken. It features a labyrinth that some locals refer to as 'the Russian game', but for the Sámi it is a very old ritual site - and for Torgeir Vassvik an important place of contemplation. Unfazed by the man-made structures, a path smoothed by reindeer runs through the labyrinth.

Three elements come together in this picture that strongly influence Torgeir Vassvik's music: the breathtaking power of nature, the indigenous Sámi culture and its constant crossing of artificial country and genre borders. The Sámi are the indigenous people of northern Europe and live in Norway, Sweden, Finland and on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Their traditional routes do not follow the border posts that have been moved back and forth between countries throughout history. And Torgeir Vassvik doesn't stick to stylistic boundaries. His music is fed by influences from all over the world, the "places behind the gardens of houses».
